“The 1% for the Planet logo appears on millions of products and services worldwide”
The Saving Marion Island’s Seabirds: The Mouse-Free Marion (MFM) Project is now an Environmental Partner with 1% for the Planet, an international organization whose business members contribute at least one percent of annual sales to environmental causes, making “environmental giving easy and effective through partnership advising, impact storytelling and third-party certification.” More than 4400 members have given over US$800 million to approved environmental partners to date. Business members display the 1% for the Planet logo on their products and then donate directly meaning there’s no middleman between members and their chosen environmental partners.

1% for the Planet originated when two longtime friends and businessmen, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia (a USA outdoor apparel company) and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies (a fly fishing shop in Montana, USA), went on a fishing trip. Realising that businesses are responsible for their environmental impact, they pledged to donate 1% of their own annual sales to environmental organizations. They then started 1% for the Planet in 2002, with the idea that a company has a responsibility to give back for its use of the planet’s resources.
The MFM Project stands to benefit from this inspiring initiative and anticipates that its environmental partnership with 1% for the Planet will contribute to its ongoing awareness-raising and fundraising efforts towards the eradication of Marion Island’s introduced mice and the ensuing recovery of South Africa’s only Special Nature Reserve.
With grateful thanks to project supporter, Frances Housdon.

The Mouse-Free Marion Project is a registered non-profit company (No. 2020/922433/08) in South Africa, established to eradicate the invasive albatross-killing mice on Marion Island in the Southern Ocean. The project was initiated by BirdLife South Africa and the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Upon successful completion, the project will restore the critical breeding habitat of over two million seabirds, many globally threatened, and improve the island’s resilience to a warming climate.
