Move for Marion is a free, global virtual movement challenge organised by the Saving Marion Island’s Seabirds: The Mouse-Free Marion (MFM) Project, inviting people from around the world to complete 5 km (approximately three miles) in support of Marion Island and its extraordinary wildlife. Participants can walk, run, cycle, paddle a canoe, swim, ride a horse, or choose any other activity that gets them moving under their own power, wherever and whenever it suits them during the week-long challenge from Saturday 31 October to Sunday 08 November 2026.
Registration is free and can be completed before the challenge or during the event period. There is no entry fee, fundraising target or competitive element – the aim is to bring people together, raise awareness and show support for protecting this unique sub-Antarctic island and its globally important seabird populations.
Participants are encouraged to share a photo or video of their achievement on social media, tag the Mouse-Free Marion Project (@MouseFreeMarion) and use the hashtags #MoveForMarion and #MouseFreeMarion. They can also challenge friends, invite colleagues, tag fellow athletes and encourage people in their personal networks to take part, helping the campaign reach new audiences. We would love your support in sharing Move for Marion with your network and encouraging your followers to get involved. Whether they are seasoned athletes or simply enjoy getting outdoors, every participant helps shine a spotlight on Marion Island and the urgent conservation work needed to protect its wildlife for generations to come.

The Saving Marion Island’s Seabirds: The Mouse-Free Marion (MFM) Project is a registered non-profit company (No. 2020/922433/08) in South Africa, established to eradicate the invasive albatross-killing mice on Marion Island in the Southern Ocean. The project was initiated by BirdLife South Africa and the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Upon successful completion, the project will restore the critical breeding habitat of over two million seabirds, many globally threatened, and improve the island’s resilience to a warming climate.
