At the end of January, the Mouse-Free Marion Project’s News Correspondent, John Cooper, had a birthday. As part of several gatherings to mark his reaching three quarters of a century, he held a breakfast party with fellow members of the Rondebosch Rocky Road Runners with whom he has run his local streets and mountain slopes three times a week for more than two decades. In lieu of receiving gifts, he asked that a group collection be made to sponsor a hectare towards the eradication of the island’s albatross-killing mice in 2024.
In the event sufficient contributions were received to sponsor seven hectares, putting the running group into the 5 ha+ Prion category; a most welcome surprise and a witness to how the project is considered a worthy cause to receive donations.
Supporters of the Mouse-Free Marion Project are encouraged to think of MFM hectare sponsorships when planning their own celebrations – be it a birthday, an engagement, a wedding, a new baby or perhaps a retirement party. Marion’s beleaguered albatrosses and petrels will thank you! The project is most grateful for the birthday sponsorship and wishes all who contributed happy running.
